According to a report in the Halifax Evening Courier, a former Calderdale Council candidate who could have faced jail over election fraud has died mysteriously at 35. Sajid Mehmood, of Saxon Street, Halifax, was discovered in bed by his wife on Saturday morning.
The former Respect Party candidate, who ran for Park ward last spring, would have been sentenced today at Bradford Crown Court after admitting making a false statement on nomination papers.
Zaffar Iqbal, chairman of the Muslim Association of Calderdale, said the community had been shocked by his death and added: "He worked very hard on local community issues."
