Burnley Councillors Face Fraud Charges
The trial of two Burnley LibDem councillors accused of election fraud began yesterday at the Sessions House at Preston Crown Court. Suspicion of fraud arose after exceptionally high numbers of proxy votes were ordered and turnout for the council election rose to 73.6%. Similarly strange figures for this May's council and mayoral elections in Hackney are, of course, totally unrelated.
