Postal Complaints Of Vote-Rigging May Herald Night Of Recounts
Council officials were bracing themselves for recounts and fraud allegations at Tower Hamlets last night, where detectives are investigating widespread vote-rigging claims. Police are also investigating allegations of intimidation and mishandling of ballot papers in Woking and mounting guard on polling stations in Birmingham after a Liberal Democrat councillor and his wife were arrested and bailed last week on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud. Surrey Police have sent uniformed patrols into county polling stations after a former Conservative councillor was jailed for four months for forging ballot papers in Guildford. Yesterday Peterborough, Lewisham and Brentwood councils piloted a scheme to ask voters at polling stations to sign for their ballot paper, but none of them compared signatures with anything else signed by the voter.
