The BBC reported yesterday that the Labour Party had suspended a candidate in the Mansfield District Council elections in advance of this week's local elections, over allegations of breaching election law.
The Party told the BBC it was no longer endorsing the candidacy of Victor Jennings in the Birklands ward and that he had been instructed to make a full and frank statement to police. Nottinghamshire Police confirmed that an election fraud allegation was reported over the weekend and was being investigated. Through his solicitor, Mr Jennings said he accepted that his nomination form was invalid and that he was currently waiting to be interviewed by the police.
