A computer at the council’s offices was used to register a host of votes in the Surrey Advertiser’s latest internet poll, questioning whether the sale of half a hectare of the publicly owned civic car park for £2.2m on a lease equivalent to less than £200 a month was good value for public money. Having been approved in the poll, the council then progressed the scheme and gave the go-ahead for a hotel to be built. Initially the poll registered 80% of voters agreeing that the public had lost out. But within hours this had swung to 60% of voters approving. Investigations by the Surrey Advertiser showed a total of 105 of the "no" votes had come from just two computer users, one of which has been narrowed down to a computer at the council’s Millmead offices.
