Baroness Ashton | The upper house today introduced an amendment to the Electoral Administration Bill in a bid to combat electoral fraud, requiring electors to sign their name and date of birth when registering to vote. Local and European elections have recently been blighted by allegations of misconduct. The Bill now faces its final hurdle in the Commons where the government majority may overturn the amendment, which peers backed by 167 votes to 144. The Government opposes the anti-fraud measures, with Constitutional Affairs Minister Baroness Ashton claiming that the peers' move may hit numbers registering to vote. |
