Local Elections "Wide Open To Vote-Rigging"
The Government today rejected widespread calls for ID checks on all voters, despite senior election officials and opposition MPs claiming that local elections are "wide open" to fraud because the Government has failed to close loopholes. The Association of Electoral Administrators called yesterday for all electors to be required to give their signature and date of birth when they registered to vote and Hackney's Returning Officer Penny Thompson pledged to implement this approach a few days ago. But yesterday the Government rejected calls for voters to provide proof of identity to get ballot papers.
