The following letter to the Editor of the East London Advertiser is interesting, because as of this morning there is nothing to be found on the web confirming any convictions in relation to last year's local council elections in Tower Hamlets. Indeed, the council website still proudly proclaims the innocence of all accused. So this letter is interesting, especially the line I've emboldened:
We brought to the attention of Tower Hamlets council and the-then returning officer Christine Gilbert in April last year, before the local council elections, that fraudulent postal vote applications had been made in the name of almost every voter in many blocks in a large part of the Limehouse ward. The New Labour authority failed to act in sufficient time to allow those people to cast their own votes for the candidates of their choice. Residents continue to feed back to us their anger about their stolen votes.
Now, over a year later, a conviction for electoral fraud has, finally, taken place.
It is essential that those responsible for the conduct of our elections ensure that proper electoral processes take place, prompt action is taken to investigate any problems and to prevent disenfranchisement of voters.
New Labour has complacently presided over a corrupted electoral process. Britain sends MPs and others as observers to check on elections in other parts of the world. How hypocritical is this, when our own system is so open to malpractice? The whole postal vote system allows for corruption and needs to be reformed.
